Vision

The Education Leadership Program at the University of Mary Washington is designed to prepare skilled, reflective, and responsive school leaders who are well-equipped to meet the needs of diverse learners in our 21st-century schools.

As a student in our program, you will not only gain a thorough understanding of research-based best practices in educational leadership but also the skills needed to successfully manage the practical aspects of school administration and supervision.

Description

The educational leadership program is offered in a cohort format and fulfills school administration and supervision requirements.

The College of Education at the University of Mary Washington offers two ways for you to earn the Virginia Administration and Supervision endorsement:

  • Master of Education degree
  • 24-credit post-graduate endorsement (This option is for students who already hold master’s degrees. Post-graduate endorsement students move through the program with master’s degree students, but they are exempt from certain classes.)
  • All students in the educational leadership program are required to complete an internship. You will accrue a total of 320 internship hours by completing embedded experiences in the core courses, shadowing a local building-level administrator, and doing an intense internship in the field.
  • Students are admitted as a cohort in the fall and attend classes two nights a week for two years (six successive semesters including summers for M.Ed. completion; four successive semesters including summer for endorsement courses only)
  • All students in the educational leadership program must receive a qualifying score on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) to qualify for the endorsement.

Information

The 30-hour master’s degree in Education Leadership fulfills Virginia’s requirements for licensure in Administration and Supervision PK-12. Courses are offered on campus and through cohorts at local and regional locations.

After being admitted into the Education Leadership program, participants who already have a master’s degree and have completed three years of teaching may complete only the licensure course work for the Administration and Supervision PK-12 license. The licensure course work is the first 24 credits of the master’s degree program and must be taken in the required sequence shown below.

The Educational Leadership program at the University of Mary Washington is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and meets all of the requirements of the Virginia Department of Education.
