Scholarship Night for the College of Education

On March 9, 2023, the University of Mary Washington’s College of Education hosted an on-campus Scholarship Night for students. Students could learn more about scholarships specific to the College of Education, which include around 30 scholarships exclusively for future teachers. The event shared options for any year of the program, and many first-year students and sophomores attended to find out what could be available to them as they advanced through their education programs. “Many students don’t apply for the scholarships available at UMW because they don’t know about them,” Dr. Brittany Garvin-Hudson, assistant professor of science education, explained. “Scholarship Night is really about making students aware of all the opportunities they have access to within the College of Education.” Among the scholarships highlighted at the event was the Strong Foundation Scholarship, which is a COE-specific financial aid program. UMW Prepares Future Educators with Summer Enrichment Program

The University of Mary Washington College of Education is leading the education discipline in an initiative to create new opportunities for aspiring young educators. In partnership with the annual UMW Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), a summer week-long program that invites rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students to the University’s campus for an enriching, pre-college experience, the College of Education Summer Institute for Future Teachers is an added program working with students who are passionate about pursuing teaching as a career field. SEP student attendees who apply for the additional programming in the Summer Institute for Future Teachers will have exclusive access to classroom sessions with the College of Education professors and get a sneak peek at the life of a student preparing for a career in education.
