Special Education
About
This program prepares future teachers to work with students with learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, mild intellectual disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders in grades K-12. Students in all licensure areas may add on the special education coursework towards the additional endorsement.
Major
Students select a major of their choice (total credit hours may be affected).
Timeline
Students should begin education coursework during the second semester of their first year. Transfer students will be individually advised to adjust timeline as needed. Students will be able to complete all licensure requirements within the undergraduate degree.
Clinical Experiences
While enrolled in the education program, students will complete multiple practicum experiences that are integrated with education courses along with additional teaching labs. These practicum placements are designed to give students experiences in a variety of schools working with diverse student populations.
During students’ final semester, they will enroll in a semester-long internship. Students are in the classroom full time with a mentor teacher and are assigned a University supervisor from the UMW faculty.
