Practicum
Practicum experiences provide teacher candidates with opportunities to connect coursework to classroom practice through observation, participation, small-group instruction, and guided teaching experiences in PK–12 settings. These field experiences allow candidates to apply educational theory in authentic learning environments while developing the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for success in the teaching profession.
Learning from Mentor Teachers
As experienced professionals, mentor teachers help teacher candidates navigate new school environments, model effective instructional practices, and provide opportunities to participate in classroom instruction and other professional responsibilities. Mentor teachers are respected educators who teach within their licensure area and are selected based on recommendations from colleagues and administrators. Their guidance and support are essential to the growth and development of future educators.
Professional Expectations
Practicum experiences are professional learning opportunities that prepare teacher candidates for internship and future careers in education. Candidates are expected to demonstrate professionalism, reliability, ethical conduct, and respect for the students, educators, and communities they serve throughout their field experiences.
Getting Started
Before beginning a practicum experience, students should review the Clinical Experiences Handbook and any information provided through the College of Education Canvas site. The handbook serves as the primary resource for clinical experience policies, requirements, procedures, professional expectations, placement information, and licensure-related guidance.
Placement Information
Practicum placements are coordinated by the Director of Clinical Experiences in partnership with local school divisions and mentor teachers. Placements are designed to provide meaningful field-based experiences that support candidates’ program requirements and professional growth.
