TESL 532: Differentiated Instruction Across the Curriculum for English Language Learners
The focus of the course is to provide an introduction to effective strategies for differentiating instruction for English Language Learners in the mainstream classroom. Participants will receive three hours (3) of graduate-level credit through the University of Mary Washington upon successful completion of the course.
The course is an online learning format and will be conducted using the Canvas course management system. Course sessions will consist of modules related to the learning outcomes and will consist of discussion boards, group seminars and learning modules.
COURSE OUTCOMES Students completing this course will be able to:
- Understand the need for language support and demonstrate how to scaffold and differentiate lessons to meet standards; Incorporate strategies in lesson planning in the content areas that reflect socio-cultural competence and understanding of the development process for ELLs;
- Employ first and second language acquisition research into teaching content area subjects; Describe literacy issues and the implications on teaching and the learning of culturally and linguistically diverse students;
- Relate to the General Principles of Language Acquisition as outlined in the current TESOL Standards K-12; The current state standards for English Language Learners known as the WIDA;
- Develop lesson structures using knowledge of cultural and cognitive learning styles; Develop formative assessment activities for use with students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; and define the different assessment tasks and how the structure of the assessment can enable or disable an ELL’s ability to comprehend the content.
These course outcomes are organized to balance the commitment to standards-based instruction with an understanding of the needs of students and thus adjusting their instructional activities to account for language proficiency.
