Students must complete general education requirements, a liberal arts or sciences major, and professional studies (education course work) requirements.

Timeline

Students complete education course work and field experiences at the undergraduate level; graduate with their class receiving their bachelor’s degree with a liberal arts or sciences major; and return for one more year during which they complete graduate education course work, an internship, and a research study.

Clinical Experiences

Students in the PreK-12 Education Program complete multiple practicum experiences during their undergraduate-graduate studies, aligned with education courses. Students complete approximately 120 practicum hours in local schools over the course of the PreK-12 Program before Student Teaching.

The internship is a 14-week field-based teaching experience in the appropriate grade level or subject area. Self-analysis and reflection on planned and implemented instruction and frequent conferences with the mentor teacher and the university supervisor are prominent aspects of the experience. Prospective teachers meet as a group throughout the experience for seminars and workshops. Because the internship must be a supervised experience, placements are made in schools local to the university.
