What’s New! In the Office of Clinical Experiences
Since our programs prepare candidates for professional work with children and youth we have a special responsibility to the school divisions in which we complete our practica and internships, and to the public. Part of how we meet this responsibility is to verify that we meet professional clearance standards for health and criminal background screening, as well as that we have completed the Virginia Department of Education Child Abuse Recognition and Intervention Training. We also want to ensure that our candidates are prepared to meet any legal liability challenges they may face in their school-based placements.
While in the past some of these clearances listed below were taken care of during education courses or right before student teaching, we are now requiring them at the start of the initial field experiences (practicum). Beginning with Fall Semester 2012 all College of Education students enrolled in any practicum-bearing course must provide the following:
- TB Screening
- Criminal History Background Screening
- Proof of Liability Insurance
- Proof of VDOE Child Abuse Recognition and Intervention Training Completion
Teacher candidates may find details regarding these requirements in their UMW email messages and by going to the Practicum Experiences or Internships tabs under the Teacher Candidates link on this website.
