Professional liability insurance protects an individual in the event of a liability challenges in the context of practicum and internship placements in which teacher candidates work with minors. Neither the Commonwealth of Virginia nor the University of Mary Washington will be responsible for providing legal defense for any professional education candidate or for paying for any judgment which may be entered against the accused; therefore, the UMW College of Education requires that all professional education candidates purchase professional liability insurance during any semester they are completing a practicum or internship.
Many insurance companies provide professional liability insurance as a rider to the homeowner or renter insurance. Many professional organizations offer professional liability coverage as a benefit of membership. Examples of such organizations include, but are not limited to, the following:
