4th Annual Educator in Residence Event

Educator in Residence 2011 Lecture

  Martha Abbott was the featured educator at the fourth annual College of Education Educator-in-Residence event April 26 at the UMW Stafford campus. The day-long event also featured graduate presentations, workshops, and an award ceremony. Abbot earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a minor in Latin from the University of Mary Washington and spent 32 years in education before joining the nonprofit sector. She also holds a master’s degree in Spanish linguistics from Georgetown University and was honored as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2004 by UMW. To end the day’s events, several graduates received awards. Olivia Costello received the Outstanding Master of Education Student Award. Laura Gomez  received the Barbara Bishop Mann Award.  Students Anne Roberts and Merilee Grubb received the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Virginia Scholars Awards. FOURTH ANNUAL UMW EDTECH CONFERENCE A SUCCESS As reported by Melina Downs: FREDERICKSBURG, VA (March 14, 2014)- Educators from across the region came together March 14 for the Fourth Annual EdTech Conference at the University of Mary Washington to talk about ways to change learning in the digital age. Students from J.W. Alvey Elementary School show Catherine Walker, adjunct instructor for the UMW College of Education, a project that they are completing. Pictured from left are Walker, fourth-graders Misha Padigala and Jessica Minelli.   Fresh from teaching his first full school year the author reflects on his traditional teacher preparation path into the classroom and finds he was instilled with a common sense of ethics, compassion, a demand for reflective practice, and a robust guiding philosophy. As a college student, he learned theory and was able to augment that with practical experience. Teachers of Promise

  On March 22-23rd, Dr. Nicole Myers, Associate Professor of Education and five students from the College of Education participated in the 10th Annual Teachers of Promise (TOP) Institute in Richmond, VA.  These students were selected by faculty for their promising potential in the field of education as demonstrated through their coursework and practicum experiences. The weekend allowed TOP participants the opportunity to meet other future teachers from across the state, engage in workshops, connect with award-winning mentor teachers, and hear from various keynote speakers the ways in which they engage students in learning opportunities. The event included a Gala Celebration at the Virginia Science Museum, a pinning and recognition ceremony, and exciting and motivating presentations.  One UMW student, Laura Gomez, received a mini-grant to be used toward the purchase of classroom materials.  Congratulations to the five 2013 UMW Teachers of Promise:  Laura Gomez, … [Read more...]
